Acid Whey and Dairy Process Wastewater

Ecovation has provided process wastewater treatment for the world’s largest dairy food processor at their Campbell, NY cheese making facility since 2003. The installation and operation of Ecovation’s patented Mobilized Film Technology (MFT) was completed under a design-build-finance-operate (DBFO) contract. Ecovation’s treatment solution eliminated previous discharge compliance issues, odor complaints, and trucking of waste byproducts. The system also provided pretreatment for process wastewater that significantly reduced the loading to existing on-site aeration lagoons.

Ecovation recently completing a five-fold expansion of the treatment facility to treat high-strength whey permeate – making this the largest system installed in the cheese and dairy industry. The expanded MFT system will convert all of the production plant’s soluble waste byproducts into biofuel and treated water. The renewable biofuel will be delivered to the production plant to offset natural gas consumption, setting a new standard for environmental sustainability in the cheese and dairy industry.
